Welcome to Terlingua, one of the most iconic communities in the Big Bend region. Known for its ghost town history, dramatic desert setting, and unmistakable personality, Terlingua offers visitors far more than a place to stay. It delivers an atmosphere that feels rugged, memorable, and completely its own.
Located near Study Butte and just outside Big Bend National Park, Terlingua gives travelers a distinctive home base for exploring the mountains, desert, river country, and scenic roads of far West Texas.
Some people come for the history. Others come for the food, the night sky, the views, or the mood of the place itself. What makes Terlingua special is how naturally all of those things come together.
Ghost town character, local flavor, striking desert scenery, and a setting that feels unlike anywhere else in Texas.
Terlingua sits in the Big Bend gateway area near Study Butte, with convenient access to the national park and scenic drives toward Lajitas.
Terlingua feels authentic, remote, and unforgettable. It combines history, atmosphere, and adventure in one remarkable place.
Terlingua offers something many travel destinations cannot. It is both a practical basecamp and an experience in its own right. You can spend the day in Big Bend National Park, then return to a community filled with history, ambiance, and local character.
It works especially well for travelers who want more than just a room for the night. Terlingua becomes part of the trip itself. The landscape, the pace, and the atmosphere all create a stronger sense of being somewhere special.
For visitors who want adventure by day and personality by night, Terlingua remains one of the most appealing places to stay in the Big Bend region.
Terlingua is known for its mining-era remains, open desert setting, and the visual character that gives the community its unmistakable identity.
The area is home to well-known places to eat, relax, and take in the atmosphere after a day of exploring the region.
Many stays in and around Terlingua feel more connected to the landscape and mood of the region than standard lodging options.
More than anything, Terlingua gives visitors a feeling. It is the kind of place people remember not only for what they did there, but for how it felt to be there.
Terlingua’s identity is closely tied to the mining era that once shaped this region. What remains today is not simply history left behind, but a community that has carried that heritage forward in a way that still defines the visitor experience.
Over time, Terlingua evolved from a mining settlement into one of the best-known travel communities in the Big Bend area. Its reputation now extends far beyond Texas because of its scenery, its visual character, and its local personality.
That combination of history, remoteness, authenticity, and atmosphere is part of what continues to draw visitors back year after year.
Staying in Terlingua places you close to several of the most memorable places and drives in the Big Bend region.
Nearby Study Butte adds practical conveniences, travel basics, and additional lodging options.
Big Bend National Park brings together mountain scenery, desert landscapes, wildlife, scenic drives, and trails that define the region.
The drive toward Lajitas offers resort amenities, dramatic scenery, and one of the best scenic drives in Texas.
Terlingua is part of a remote desert region, and that remoteness is part of its appeal. Visitors usually have the best experience when they plan ahead and allow themselves time to slow down.
Terlingua is not just a daytime destination. Evenings often become some of the most memorable parts of the trip as the light softens and the atmosphere settles in.
Terlingua works especially well as a base for exploring the park, nearby communities, scenic routes, local dining, and the broader Big Bend experience over multiple days.

Chisos Basin to remain open in Big Bend National Park. 🙌
With construction plans on hold, the previously anticipated closures will no longer take place, which means that winding road into the mountains will stay open and ready to welcome visitors.
Those who know, know: when summer heat settles over the desert, the Chisos Basin answers with fresh breezes, cooler temps and shaded trails.
Visit nps.gov for more information.
Good news for winter travelers! Chisos Basin will remain OPEN through the 2025 winter season, including lodging, trails, the visitor center, and food services.
Next summer, thanks to funding from the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) Legacy Restoration Fund, construction work on significant improvements to the Chisos Basin area of the park is expected to begin on May 1, 2026, and continue for approximately two years.
Until then, enjoy the beauty of the basin!

✨ Your Big Bend stargazing calendar: July 14 – August 15 ✨
Home to some of the darkest night skies in the lower 48, Big Bend was made for looking up. Here`s what`s lighting up (and darkening) our skies over the next month (Photo by @tonymaples):
🌑 July 14 — New Moon. Tonight! The darkest skies of the month mean the Milky Way core glows overhead all evening. No telescope required. 📸 by @marcusc_photo
🌒 July 15–17 — Earthshine moon meets Venus. Look west at dusk for a razor-thin crescent glowing with "earthshine" — sunlight reflecting off Earth onto the moon`s dark side. On the 16th and 17th, it pairs up with brilliant Venus. 📸 by @visitpresidiotexas
☄️ July 17 — Perseid season begins. The year`s most beloved meteor shower starts flinging its first shooting stars across our skies (and keeps going through Aug 24). 📸 by Lee McMillan
🌕 July 29 — Full Buck Moon. Watch it rise over the Chisos Mountains — bring a camera. 📸 by @timmckennaterlingua
🌠 July 30–31 — Double meteor shower. The Southern Delta Aquariids (up to 25/hour) and Alpha Capricornids peak together. The bright moon will wash some out, so catch them after midnight the week before the peak. 📸 @gregvaughnphotos
💥 August 12–13 — The Perseids PEAK, under a new moon. This is the one. 60–100 meteors per hour with zero moonlight to compete with — expected to be one of the best Perseid displays in years. Best after midnight until dawn. 📷 by NPS/ L. Nowell
💫 August 14–15 — Venus at its brightest. Look west just after sunset for the dazzling "evening star" at its greatest distance from the sun. 📸 by 📷 NPS CA. Hoyt
Terlingua, Lajitas, Marathon, Study Butte. Every corner of Brewster County is a front-row seat. Send to your best stargazing buddies now, because that Perseids weekend won`t wait. 🔭

"Big Bend National Park is bigger than Rhode Island and the only national park that contains an entire mountain range, the Chisos Mountains. The skies are dark, the roads to the park are long," notes Carrie Dennis in her recent piece for @travelandleisure. "Majestic Big Bend National Park is fabulous for hiking, scenic car rides, and the Fossil Discovery Exhibit."
Beautifully photographed by Jon Mattrisch @jmke.visuals, the article highlights @bigbendnps`s enormous skies and expansive landscapes and the ‘serene trails leading through the rugged peaks of the Chisos Mountains.’ These moments reflect just why Big Bend is such a treasure. "Deep inside a remote cave in Big Bend, archeologists have uncovered a pristine hunting kit — potentially the oldest intact weapon system in North America. This discovery offers a rare glimpse into the lives of ancient hunters, revealing tools, weapons, and even a folded pronghorn hide left untouched for thousands of years. Each artifact tells a story of survival, craftsmanship, and the deep connect between humans and the land." - @TexasParksWildlife
