Home / Events / Capturing the Cosmos Astrophotography Workshop (March 2026)
Capturing the Cosmos is a multi-day astrophotography workshop designed for photographers who want to experience Big Bend’s night skies while building real field and editing skills. Hosted in Big Bend National Park, this immersive workshop combines dark sky access, expert instruction, and hands-on learning in one of the most photogenic landscapes in Texas.
The workshop is led by photographers Ben Sassani and Mallory Davis, both of whom have extensive experience photographing the Big Bend night sky. For participants, that means learning in the field from instructors who know both the technical side of astrophotography and the unique challenges of working in this environment.
For photographers visiting the region, this event offers more than a class. It is a chance to spend several days under some of the darkest skies in the country while developing images and techniques that can carry well beyond the workshop itself.

Astrophotography field skills, Milky Way planning, camera settings, PhotoPills, Lightroom editing, stacking techniques, and noise reduction
Big Bend is one of the most compelling places in the world for night sky photography, and this workshop is built around that advantage. Rather than learning in a generic setting, participants are working in a landscape known for clear skies, dramatic terrain, and a strong sense of scale after dark.
The workshop also balances technical learning with real-world practice. It is not only about theory. It is about applying settings, planning shots, scouting locations, and working through the editing process in a setting where the results can be genuinely spectacular.
For beginners looking to improve or more experienced photographers wanting to sharpen their workflow, this kind of hands-on environment can make a major difference.
Participants will learn how to scout night photography locations, dial in effective camera settings, plan Milky Way shots, and use tools such as PhotoPills to improve timing and composition.
The workshop also covers editing and workflow topics including Lightroom techniques, image stacking, and noise reduction, helping participants improve both capture and finishing.
A major part of astrophotography is knowing when and where to shoot. This workshop helps photographers better understand timing, sky conditions, and how to make the most of a dark-sky destination.
Beyond individual techniques, participants gain experience actually working in the landscape, which often leads to stronger results and more confidence on future shoots.
What makes this event especially compelling is the setting itself. Big Bend’s night sky is not just a backdrop. It is the core of the experience. The landscape, the lack of urban light, and the dramatic horizon all contribute to a workshop that feels more immersive than a standard classroom-based photography event.
Participants are learning in the same environment they are trying to photograph, which creates a stronger connection between instruction and results. That real-world setting is part of what makes an event like this so valuable.
One participant described the experience by saying they came home with photos they honestly could not believe they had taken, which captures exactly why workshops like this leave such a lasting impression.
This workshop fits naturally into a broader Big Bend itinerary, especially for travelers interested in photography, dark skies, and remote landscapes.
Spend more time in Big Bend National Park to experience its scenic drives, trail systems, overlooks, and wide-open desert views by day.
Nearby Terlingua and Study Butte offer lodging, local character, dining, and easy access to the park’s western gateway.
The wider region gives photographers a rich mix of landscapes, road scenes, desert textures, and night skies, making it ideal for extending the trip beyond the workshop itself.
With sessions spanning several days, this event works best when planned as a dedicated photography trip rather than a quick stop.
The workshop includes both practical field instruction and post-processing guidance, so expect a more immersive experience than a casual photo outing.
Because the event takes place in a remote national park setting, planning ahead and allowing extra time will help make the experience smoother and more enjoyable.
