From championship golf to paddleboarding on the Rio Grande, from shooting sports to equestrian adventures, Lajitas provides world-class experiences in one of Texas’ most dramatic settings. The resort’s adventure program has earned consistently positive reviews from visitors seeking active experiences beyond the golf course.
Black Jack’s Crossing Championship Golf
Designed by PGA Hall of Fame golfer Lanny Wadkins, Black Jack’s Crossing has earned recognition among the top golf courses in Texas and the nation. The championship course stretches 7,300 yards from the back tees, offering five sets of tees to accommodate all skill levels. The course winds through the desert landscape, incorporating natural washes, rocky outcroppings, and the Rio Grande as hazards. The signature par-3 17th hole plays over an actual canyon, creating one of golf’s most memorable short holes. As one enthusiast shared, ‘This might be the most spectacular golf course I’ve ever played. Every hole offers views that make you forget about your score.’ The exceptional course condition features bentgrass greens providing smooth putting surfaces in the desert environment.
SUP River Excursions
The resort offers stand-up paddleboard (SUP) excursions on the Rio Grande, providing a unique perspective on the Big Bend landscape. These guided trips cater to all skill levels, from first-timers to experienced paddlers. The calm waters of this Rio Grande stretch make it ideal for paddleboarding, offering a peaceful way to experience the river ecosystem. Participants can expect to see birds, fish, and potentially river otters along the banks. No prior paddleboarding experience is required—guides provide instruction on paddling technique, balance, and river safety before launching. Inflatable boards offer stability and are forgiving for beginners. As one guest noted, ‘SUPing the Rio Grande was an unexpected highlight of our trip. The water was calm, the views were amazing, and our guide made it accessible even for beginners.’
Shooting Sports
Lajitas offers diverse shooting activities suitable for all experience levels, from novice-friendly clay shooting to supervised rifle and pistol experiences. The clay target shooting facilities offer skeet and trap with instruction for beginners and challenging layouts for experienced shooters. The desert backdrop creates a unique atmosphere for this classic sport. Supervised rifle and pistol ranges allow guests to experience shooting in a safe, controlled environment with certified instructors providing guidance. All equipment and safety gear are provided. As one guest noted, ‘The shooting range at Lajitas was surprisingly fun! The instructors were patient with beginners and the desert backdrop made it a memorable experience.’
Equestrian Adventures
In partnership with Lajitas Stables, the resort offers full-service guided trail rides from a location 2.5 miles west of the resort.
