Yes, there are two Chili Cook-Offs at the same time!! Both Cook Offs include 3 days of music, fun and of course, chili, near Historic Terlingua Ghostown. But there the similarity ends.
The CASI cook off is a lot bigger, with 8,000-10,000 folks in attendance. Most are there to party, and they do so with a vengeance. Most never even see a bowl of Chili. The Tolbert-Fowler Cook Off is tamer by comparison, with few than 1500 people in attendance. Still a lot of people making noise (and dust) in the desert, but a lot of them have been coming for years, and enjoy the more relaxed atmosphere. One noticeable difference is that the CASI cook-off has one band that plays every night; the Tolbert-Fowler cook off has two bands each night, and is more entertainment oriented. You’ll see some serious boot scooting. NOTE: If you have never been to one of these events, please know that the peace and quiet that Terlingua is normally famous for takes a vacation that weekend.
